The Story
Negroamaro means 'black bitter' in Italian. It's Puglia's workhorse grape—dark, rustic, powerful. For decades, it was shipped north to 'strengthen' weak Piedmont and Tuscan wines. Now it's Puglia's pride.
Insider Story
Puglia was Italy's bulk wine factory. Negroamaro was over-cropped (100+ hL/ha) and sold in tanker trucks to northern Italy. The wine was used to add color and body to anemic Chianti and Barolo. Nobody bottled Negroamaro as a standalone wine.
In the 1990s-2000s, a few producers (Taurino, Leone de Castris, Cantele) started making serious Negroamaro. Low yields, oak aging, single-vineyard bottlings. Critics loved it. 'Puglia makes world-class wine!'
But Puglia's reputation lingers. Negroamaro is still seen as 'cheap Italian red.' Prices stay low ($15-40) even for top examples. It's one of Italy's best values.
Technical Deep Dive
Negroamaro has thick skins (deep color, high tannins: 3,000-3,500 mg/L), moderate acidity (5-6 g/L), and dark fruit with earthy notes. Alcohol: 13-15% ABV.
Salice Salentino DOC is the main appellation. It requires 80%+ Negroamaro and 2 years aging for Riserva. The wines are dark, rustic, age-worthy (10-20 years).
Industry Secrets
Primitivo di Manduria gets all the attention, but Negroamaro is Puglia's real treasure. A $20-30 Salice Salentino Riserva rivals $50-80 wines from Tuscany. Nobody knows about it.
