The Story
Petit Manseng makes Jurançon—southwest France's legendary sweet wine. The grapes hang until November, shriveling on the vine (passerillage). The result is intensely sweet, high-acid wine that ages for decades.
Insider Story
Jurançon was Henry IV's baptismal wine (1553). The king's lips were rubbed with Jurançon and garlic—a Béarnaise tradition. The wine has been celebrated ever since.
Petit Manseng is difficult—tiny berries, thick skins, low yields. But those thick skins resist rot, allowing grapes to hang until November. Water evaporates, sugars concentrate. It's passerillage (drying on the vine), not botrytis.
Jurançon Moelleux (sweet) is the classic style—honeyed, tropical, high-acid. Jurançon Sec (dry) is also brilliant—aromatic, mineral, age-worthy.
Virginia (USA) has adopted Petit Manseng. The grape loves humid climates (rot-resistant). Virginia Petit Manseng is America's best sweet wine.
Technical Deep Dive
Petit Manseng has extremely high acidity (8-10 g/L), tropical and honeyed aromatics, and thick skins (rot-resistant). Alcohol: 12-14% ABV (dry), 11-13% ABV (sweet with high RS).
Passerillage: grapes dry on the vine (not picked and dried like Amarone). Water evaporates, sugars concentrate to 300-400 g/L. The wines have 100-150 g/L residual sugar but taste balanced due to high acidity.
Aging: Jurançon Moelleux ages 20-40 years. The acidity preserves freshness.
Industry Secrets
Jurançon is criminally undervalued. $20-40 bottles rival $80-100 Sauternes. Clos Uroulat, Domaine Cauhapé, and Clos Lapeyre are top producers. But nobody knows because 'Jurançon' is hard to pronounce.
