The Story

In North Macedonia's Tikveš region, Stanušina produces delicate, aromatic wines that defy Balkan stereotypes. While neighbors make powerful reds, Stanušina offers elegance and freshness.

Insider Story

Stanušina is North Macedonia's other indigenous red—while Vranec gets the glory, Stanušina offers something different. Light, aromatic, and fresh, it's closer to Beaujolais than Bull's Blood.

The grape nearly disappeared under Yugoslavia. Cooperative wineries preferred Vranec (more color, more body, easier to sell). Stanušina survived in family vineyards and traditional villages.

Tikveš Winery (the region's largest) revived commercial Stanušina in the 2000s. Their rosé version became popular—refreshing, affordable, perfect for Macedonian summers.

But serious red Stanušina is rare. Only a handful of producers make the effort to vinify it carefully. These wines are worth seeking.

Technical Deep Dive

Stanušina produces pale, light-bodied wines with low tannins (800-1,200 mg/L), bright acidity (6-7 g/L), and aromatic red fruit character (strawberry, cherry, raspberry).

The grape is early-ripening and thin-skinned. It produces wines closer to Pinot Noir than Merlot—elegant rather than powerful.

Flavor profile: strawberry, cherry, raspberry, herbs, and floral notes. The wine is aromatic and delicate. Serve slightly chilled.

Winemaking: short maceration (5-10 days) preserves freshness. Extended skin contact produces bitter, tannic wine—the opposite of what Stanušina does best. Stainless steel is preferred over oak.

Aging: drink Stanušina young (1-3 years). It loses freshness quickly. This is a summer wine, not a cellar wine.

Industry Secrets

Stanušina rosé is Macedonia's secret summer wine. Light, fresh, affordable ($8-15). Perfect for outdoor drinking.

Red Stanušina is rare and worth seeking. Tikveš's 'Kratoshija' and Popov Winery's varietal bottlings show the grape's potential.

Pairing: Stanušina's light body and fresh acidity pair brilliantly with Macedonian grilled vegetables (ajvar, pindjur) and fresh salads.
