Region profile
History
Viticulture since pre-Roman times. Part of Austria-Hungary until 1919 (Treaty of Saint-Germain). Germanic traditions remain: German grape names, Austrian winemaking precision. Tramin/Termeno village = ancestral home of Gewürztraminer (grape named after village). DOC 1975. 1985: Elena Walch became first female winery owner in region. Alois Lageder (1823 foundation) pioneered biodynamics from 2004. Cantina Terlano cooperative (1893) set quality standards. Modern era: 96% DOC production (highest Italy) proves quality focus. Italian Wine Enthusiast 2020: "Italy's most reliable region."
