Domaine Croix Duplex

Why go

Domaine Croix Duplex is the Vogel family's estate, run today by Maude Vogel, the third generation, a few steps below Grandvaux station. It pours 31 of its own wines from 14 grape varieties, including Calamin Grand Cru and Argile Dézaley Grand Cru. Its Oeil-de-Perdrix 2013 was a nominee at the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse 2014. Unlike the village's seasonal Caveau Corto, it opens Monday to Saturday all year, a winter stop in Lavaux.

What to expect

The caveau pours by the flight, three or four wines from a list that runs from Villette, Epesses and St-Saphorin Chasselas to Calamin Grand Cru and Argile Dézaley Grand Cru, a Chablais Syrah and a Bonvillars Oeil de Perdrix. Platters of Gruyère and Tomme de Lavaux, or dried meats, are for sharing. The bookable Chasselas tasting adds a cellar visit and an aroma wheel; the French-only "Parenthèse Confidentielle" (CHF 120, up to 12 people) is led by Maude Vogel.

When to go

Go Monday to Saturday; the estate is closed on Sunday. In winter, tastings move into the cellar around an open fire. The sun sets around 16:48 in mid-December and 17:14 in mid-January, before the 18:00 close, so a late winter afternoon ends at dusk. Summer brings ticketed terrace evenings such as Pizza & Wine. Private events pause in September and October for the harvest.

Practical details

Open Monday to Saturday 10:00–18:00 (the house also lists Thursday to Saturday until 19:00); closed Sunday. The caveau serves wines and platters during opening hours. A 3-wine tasting costs CHF 20 and a 4-wine tasting CHF 26 per person, about 1h30; platters for 3–4 people cost CHF 15–38. The guided Chasselas tasting with a cellar visit starts at CHF 33, in French or English, last arrival 16:30. Listings disagree on hours: phone +41 21 799 15 31 before an evening visit.

Getting there

Take the S40 or S41 from Lausanne to Grandvaux, 9–10 minutes, about twice an hour; the estate is 100 m from the station, just below it. Grandvaux is on the upper line along the top of Lavaux, not the lakeside line. From Cully, bus 381 climbs to Grandvaux, gare sud in about 15 minutes; from Montreux allow 41–46 minutes with one change. There is parking on site.

About Domaine Croix Duplex

Domaine Croix Duplex is a family wine estate at Route de Chenaux 2 in Grandvaux, in the Lavaux vineyard terraces, just below Grandvaux station. The house dates it to 1929, when Samuel Vogel settled in the village and built a house and a cellar. It farms about 26 hectares across several Vaud regions and pours its wines in a caveau, a veranda and on two terraces. Lavaux has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 2007.

History

The house tells it this way: in 1929 Samuel Vogel, from German-speaking Switzerland, settled in Grandvaux, built his house and then a cellar, and made the first wines himself. Jean Vogel and his wife Marlyse ran the estate from 1973 and bought a first vineyard plot in Epesses in 1975, the start of its spread across Vaud. Maude Vogel, the third generation, runs it today.

What insiders know

Most Lavaux villages sit on the lakeside line, while Grandvaux station is on the upper line from Lausanne, so many visitors miss it. That makes this estate a weekday and winter stop when the village's Caveau Corto is shut (it pours Friday to Sunday, April to October). From the station a signed walk drops through Riex and Epesses to Cully in about 2h30, linking it with the rest of the trail.
