Posthotel Rössli is a family-run inn on Gstaad's car-free Promenade, and its Stübli is hung with deer, roe-deer and chamois antlers. Fondue moitié-moitié costs CHF 28 and butter rösti with cheese, ham and fried egg CHF 27. The wine list carries Swiss whites and reds from Vaud, Valais, Neuchâtel, Graubünden and Ticino, but no wine from the canton of Bern. On the Gstaad trail it is the old village inn set against the Gstaad Palace.

What to expect
Both rooms serve the same menu, à la carte plus a seasonal daily dish. The Stübli has small nooks, antlers and old photographs, and locals drop in for an early coffee and croissant; the Alti Poscht hosts the breakfast buffet and parties of up to 50. The menu marks calf's head and veal liver in vinegar sauce, Suuri Läberli, as Rössli specialities. A 2017 Voyages d'Affaires guide described regulars and tourists over rösti, fried egg, ham and melted alpine cheese.

When to go
Go in winter or high summer for the full week. In the off-season, September to mid-December and March to the end of June, both restaurants are closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. In summer a terrace opens directly on the Promenade. Lunch runs 11:30 to 14:00 and, in Indagare's words, fills with a mix of skiers, tourists and locals; snacks cover 14:00 to 18:30, and dinner runs 18:30 to 21:45.

Getting there
The door is Promenade 10, on Gstaad's car-free Promenade, about 320 m from Gstaad station. Trains reach Gstaad on the MOB line: from Bern change at Spiez and Zweisimmen (the Lötschberger runs direct from Bern to Zweisimmen), and from Lausanne change at Montreux. Parking is limited; the public car park costs CHF 10 a day, and the house asks guests to come by public transport. The Rössli in Feutersoey is a different restaurant.

About Posthotel Rössli
Posthotel Rössli is a 21-room family hotel with two restaurants, the Stübli and the Alti Poscht, at Promenade 10 in the centre of Gstaad, in the Bernese Oberland. The house says the building dates from about 1823, became an inn in 1845 and held the village post counter around 1855, which gave it its name. The family has owned it since 1922, and Conroy Widmer leads it today.
History
The house dates the building to about 1823 and says Bendicht Steffen took it over in 1844 and ran it as an inn from 1845, and that around 1855 it also served as the village post counter. Gstaad's old houses burned in July 1898; the house says its building was spared. The resort grew after that fire and the 1905 railway, and the Gstaad Palace opened in December 1913. A history, "150 Jahre Posthotel Rössli", appeared in 1995.

What insiders know
Rosie the Calf, a sculpture Liza Todd Tivey made in 1999, stands almost in front of the hotel. Most à la carte dishes can be taken away, including a portioned fondue mix to melt at home. Guests from outside the hotel can join the breakfast buffet, 07:30 to 10:00, by reservation. In 2010 the critic Gilles Pudlowski wrote of the Stübli: "C’est un lieu immobile".
