The Story

Created by crossing Fetească Albă with Grasă de Cotnari, Fetească Regală ('royal maiden') is Romania's most-planted white grape. This 20th-century creation combines parental virtues into something uniquely Romanian.

Insider Story

Fetească Regală was created accidentally in the 1920s. At the Sărăteni research station, Fetească Albă vines naturally crossed with nearby Grasă de Cotnari. Researchers noticed the distinctive offspring and began propagating it.

The 'Royal' name was added in 1930 when King Carol II visited the winery. Whether he actually tasted the wine or just lent his name remains unclear.

Fetească Regală proved ideal for Romanian conditions—it combines Fetească Albă's aromatics with Grasă's body and structure. The grape spread rapidly.

Today, Fetească Regală covers more Romanian vineyard area than any other white variety. It's the workhorse grape—reliable, adaptable, and capable of quality at all price points.

The best examples come from Transylvania's highlands, where cool temperatures preserve acidity and aromatics. Mass-produced examples from warm plains are less distinguished.

Technical Deep Dive

Fetească Regală produces medium-bodied whites with moderate acidity (5.5-7 g/L), floral aromatics (acacia, orange blossom), and rounded fruit character (apple, peach).

The grape is more vigorous and productive than Fetească Albă—one reason it became Romania's workhorse variety. It adapts to various terroirs.

Flavor profile: acacia, orange blossom, apple, peach, subtle honey notes. The wine is aromatic but rounder and fuller than Fetească Albă.

Winemaking ranges widely: - Fresh: stainless steel, no oak, aromatic and crisp - Complex: barrel fermentation, lees aging, fuller and more textured

Fetească Regală ages better than Fetească Albă—top examples improve for 5-8 years. The extra body provides structure for development.

Industry Secrets

Fetească Regală's parentage (Fetească Albă × Grasă de Cotnari) was confirmed by DNA analysis. The cross was natural, not planned.

Quality varies enormously. Mass-produced Fetească Regală can be thin and neutral; top examples rival fine Alsace whites.

The grape makes excellent sweet wine—late-harvest Fetească Regală can be profound, rivaling German Auslese.

Transylvania vs. Moldova: Transylvanian examples are crisper and more aromatic; Moldovan versions are fuller and riper. Both can be excellent.
