Why go

The Dézaley vineyard has no caveau of its own; its growers send visitors to the village caveaux, and in Epesses that means this vaulted cellar. More than twenty growers take turns behind the bar, each pouring their own Epesses, Calamin and Dézaley. The business magazine Bilanz counts the Dézaley among the top regions of Swiss wine growing. It is the evening stop on the Lavaux trail.

What to expect

Each week a different grower, the tenancier, stands behind the bar and pours wines from their own cellar. The vaulted room holds 20 to 30 people, and in good weather the terrace looks over Lake Geneva. Food stays simple: Vaudois sausages and apples. In 2024 the rota included Blaise Duboux, Xavier Fonjallaz and J.-F. Chevalley.

About Caveau des Vignerons d'Epesses

The Caveau des Vignerons d'Epesses is a growers' wine bar in a vaulted cellar at Ruelle du Vieux-Bourg 2, in the Lavaux village of Epesses on Lake Geneva. More than twenty growers take turns pouring their own Epesses, Calamin and Dézaley. Vaud law draws the Calamin around the former commune of Epesses and the Dézaley just east of it in Puidoux, so the village sits between two Grand cru zones of Lavaux.

Terroir

Vaud law places the Dézaley in the commune of Puidoux, between the Forestay stream and the lake, and the Calamin in the former commune of Epesses south of the Corniche road. Both are Grand cru designations of origin, each a single production place, and their grapes must reach at least 17.3% Brix. The growers say the Dézaley covers 54 ha, shared by about 120 owners and planted about 90% with Chasselas.

What insiders know

In winter the Epesses glass moves to Les 11 Terres on Ruelle du Petit-Crêt, which gives standard hours on Monday and Friday 14h to 19h30 and on Saturday and Sunday 11h to 19h30. Blaise Duboux sells bottles at his cellar on Saturdays 09h to 15h. Nearby, Domaine Croix Duplex in Grandvaux opens Monday to Saturday, and Domaine Louis Bovard in Cully pours some wines on request.

Dézaley: Walk the Grand Cru Gate by Gate, Then Drink It in Epesses

The Dézaley has no village of its own: under Vaud law it is a slope of Puidoux above the lake. Its growers mark it with metal gates. Climb the stair beside the Forestay waterfall to Porte 2, walk west through vines Cistercian monks planted in the 12th century, and stand at Porte 1, where the Dézaley meets the Calamin. Then go down to Epesses, where from April to October growers pour their own Dézaley in a vaulted cellar. Bilanz counts the Dézaley among the top regions of Swiss wine growing.
