Matterhorn Alpine Crossing - Wine Across Borders
The world's highest cross-border wine experience. Opened July 2023, named TIME's Greatest Places 2024. Cross from Switzerland to Italy at 3,480m via cable car. Drink Valais Fendant on the Swiss side, cross the painted border line, drink Valle d'Aosta Petit Rouge on the Italian side. No passport control. Just wine cultures meeting at the roof of Europe.

Whymper Stube - Where the 1865 Tragedy Began
Eat fondue and drink Valais wine at Whymper Stube in Hotel Monte Rosa, where Edward Whymper and his team stayed the night before the first Matterhorn ascent on July 14, 1865. Four of seven climbers died on descent. Then walk 3 minutes to the churchyard where Croz, Hudson, and Hadow are buried. History is not abstract - it's 100 meters away.

Fine dining at 1,620m elevation where the wine comes from vineyards visible from the terrace.

Mountaineers' Cemetery - Where Legends Rest
Visit the churchyard where 3 of the 4 Matterhorn first ascent victims are buried. Michel Croz (guide, age 35), Charles Hudson (36), Douglas Hadow (19) - all fell to their deaths July 14, 1865. Lord Francis Douglas's body was never found. Read the inscriptions. Reflect on the obsession that drives humans to climb impossible peaks. Free and always accessible.
